| Introduction | Richard Peres is an American writer and business consultant living in Istanbul, and a frequent contributor to Today's Zaman, Zaman and Star newspapers. He recently completed a new book, "The Day Turkey Stood Still: Merve Kavakci's Walk into the Turkish Parliament," to be published by Garnet Press, Reading, England in December, 2011.
