| Interests | I have created art since I was a teenager. I studied art and applied design at the University of Maryland, sculpture at the Washington Studio School and pottery at the Glen Echo Pottery. For 25 years, I was an elementary and middle school art teacher. I was profoundly influenced by the playful and interactive energy that my young students brought to their projects, and I strive to apply the same creative approach to my own work. Currently I'm working at Harmony Hall arts center as the ceramics instructor. My work has recently been juried into exhibits in several galleries, including Harmony Hall, Annmarie Gardens, Artists and Makers, The Popcorn Gallery at Glen Echo, and The Del Ray Artisans Gallery. I have concentrated on clay as my medium since 2001. I find it fascinating because the purposeful manipulation of the raw material is always tempered by the need to ensure every piece has enough structural integrity to survive firing. Inspired by the environment of the Chesapeake Bay. I sculpt birds, wings and nests and functional ceramic pieces that are influenced by landforms. My work is usually wood fired, encouraging atmospheric conditions that alter the chemical structure of the clay |
