Introduction I am an attorney who has been practicing law in Albany, New York since 1985. While I have enjoyed a wide and varied practice, I have represented interests in Indian Gaming and Harness Horse Racing in New York. We have been in a quickly evolving gaming environment since the Oneida Nation Nation opened their first Turning Stone Casino in 1993. After the Oneidas opened, the Mohawk and Seneca Nations went through much more difficult machinations to open their Casinos. The New York State Government determined early on that it would be folly to leave all gaming in New York to the Indian Nations and undertook to allow Video Lottery Terminals at Harness Horse Racing tracks. Now Governor Cuomo is advocating for the legalization of full casino gaming. All of this is moving quickly. Bennett Liebman of Albany Law School's Government Law Center provided invaluable insight and updates on the Gaming environment in New York. However, Mr. Liebman has now moved on to work for Governor Cuomo as his Gaming Advisor. This Blog will attempt to try and fill at least part of the void in providing ongoing updates of Gaming News and Events in New York.
