| Introduction | Hi! I'm Lisa Atkins, one of The Cultivated Gardeners, along with my sister, Barb. We founded this company in 2000. We started out gardening like most companies, but soon realized that organic gardening was the future. We quickly weaned our gardens off chemicals, and learned everything we could about ecological ways of maintaining beautiful landscapes. Soon I began teaching Gaia College's Ecological Landscape Design, initially through Burnaby Continuing Education, and now also through Langara College. We just finished our eighth year of the Ecological Landscape Design course, and I am increasingly impressed with the knowledge of students in my class. It is so inspiring that people are studying and reading and gobbling up information on how to work organically with our earth. |
| Interests | Knowing how organic gardening has grown as an interest among the general population gives me great hope that we can bring organic gardening back in the mainstream. Truthfully, chemicals have only been used on landscapes in any quantity since WWII. My hope is organic gardening will go back to being labelled "traditional" gardening instead of "alternative" gardening because it is the traditional way to garden. For thousands of years the world gardened organically. Once we revert back to accepting organic gardening as traditional, maybe the mystery will fade away and people will forget there ever were chemicals for the garden. |
