ACTS and Honduras Teaches
My blogs
| Introduction | ACTS (Americans Caring Teaching Sharing) was established in 1986 in response to concerns for peace and justice in Central America. Our mission is community development in partnership with farming villages in the remote mountains of Honduras in the Yoro region. For the first 15 years, ACTS concentrated on the village of El Rosario to improve their health standards, promote community involvement, and provide help with sustainable agriculture. ACTS has now been in El Rosario for 24 years and continues to develop sustainable projects in conjunction with the community. In the last ten years, we have been doing a special trip just for teachers, focusing on classroom skills, cultural exchange and friendship. We have been taking teachers from all over, including Antioch New England Graduate School, to El Rosario to meet with teachers in Honduras in a workshop setting in an effort to create a cross cultural learning experience for all. It is not for the American teachers to come to Honduras to ‘educate’ the Hondurans, but an opportunity for both groups to share their ideas, strengths, challenges and activities with one another. |
