| Introduction | So who am I? I am an adult amateur music student, who decided mid 2012 at the age of 35 to take up the challenge of learning the Cello - a fretless instrument that produces sound by scraping sticky horse hair across strands of metal. My background is in physics so I tend to take a scientific approach to understanding music. I do have a moderate amount of musical education as well. Clarinet begining at age 11, guitar at 17, piano at 18, and tenor sax in my 30s. I have not achieved anything beyond intermediate status in any instrument, but I can read music reasonably well, and I know a enough music theory to vaguely understand some of the arcane musings of jazz musicians. I had tried playing violin at age 18 and was scared off in the first month by a teacher who kept reminding me that at 18, I was too old to learn to play very well. Now with a more mature outlook on the learning process and pocketful of optimism, I am attempting the Cello, which by many accounts is even more difficult than the violin. What can I say? I have learned to embrace the feeling of leaning into the wind. |
