Introduction I grew up on a farm in southern Iowa near Keosauqua, close to the Iowa Missouri border. I have five bothers and am the only girl in the family, the youngest of six kids. I grew up a tomboy, as you might guess, and I enjoyed life on the farm just like my brothers, whether it was driving a tractor, slaughtering a hog, hunting pheasants or deer, or painting the barn. My folks thought I was growing up too much a tomboy so they made me take piano lessons, and my grandmother made sure I learned how to knit and quilt—all of which I still enjoy. But I enjoyed playing football and baseball with my brothers, too, and am now a big fan of the Chicago Bears and the St. Louis Cardinals. Though I have written several short stories—and I hope to publish them someday, too—Summer and Lilacs is my first attempt at writing a novel; I am so lucky to have found a publisher right off. When Robert Brown, the Acquisitions Editor at Ampichellis Ebooks, sent me a contract for my book, I thought, Oh my God! Is this actually happening to me? I had to pinch myself. I mean, really. And then when I saw the cover art—which blew my mind—I knew it was true.
