Location Fort Myers Beach, Florida, United States
Introduction Mound House is the site of a 2,000 year old Calusa Indian Shell Mound and the William H. Case house which represents the oldest standing structure on Estero Island dating 1906-1921. Newton Park is a beach front property and historic home rich in island history associated with Jim and Ellie Newton whose extensive friendships with Thomas Edision, Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone and Charles Lindbergh are recorded in Jim Newton's book, "Uncommon Friends". Outside sources have provided funding for acquisition, development and maintenance making these community cultural resouces possible at little expense to the Town of Fort Myers Beach.
Interests The Visitor Experience: Approaching the Mound House entrance, visitors experience old Florida, delighting in the 2.8 acres of period landscaped bayfront property. As the oldest standing structure on Estero Island, the Mound House and grounds will be restored to its original1921 grandeur using Florida’s historic preservation standards. Meandering through the grounds on an ethno-botanical shell trail, visitors will learn about the tropical plants, trees and the orchard that flourished on this site during the early 20th century. Strategically placed educational signage will identify points of interest.
