Introduction After 30 years of addiction to heroin/opioids & cocaine, I began medication assisted treatment in 2000 using methadone. MAT provided the only evidence-based treatment available for opioid addiction & gave me the stability to maintain steady employment & obtain my bachelor's & master's degrees. MAT also created a safe, stable space where I could tackle the recovery work of SUD/OUD, homelessness, trauma, criminal justice involvement & mental health challenges. In 2004 I began providing direct service to people experiencing homelessness & by 2009, I was presenting my recovery story nationally at conferences & forums around the country. In 2012, I assumed the role of Deputy Director for the SAMHSA BRSS TACS contract. In 2014, I discharged from MAT by personal choice & under medical supervision to "experience life on its own terms." In addition to my role as BRSS TACS Deputy Director, in 2018 I joined the STR-ORN contract as a senior Recovery Team member to promote recovery & assist others with their own journeys. I continue both positions today & support & advocate for marginalized/disenfranchised groups.
