| Introduction | I am 61 years old and have been running competitively since 1979. I had some success in high school, becoming captain of the cross country and track teams as a senior. I survived one season of college cross country before my attention switched to other aspects of the college experience. I continued to run and race sporadically through my 20s and 30s (one marathon, some half marathons, and a fair number of shorter races). At the age of 40 I began running marathons regularly (1 or 2 per year) with a PR of 2:58 in 2008. In my 50s, I began running ultramarathons. I've had two second place finishes at the 100K distance (PR 9:12 in 2018) and a second-place finish at the 100-mile distance (PR 17:37 in 2019). My 100K and 100-mile PR races were 3rd and 6th fastest, respectively, in North America for the year in the 50-59 age group (per Ultrarunning.com). After recovering from 2020 and 2021 knee surgeries, I made my return to ultrarunning in Dec 2023. In 2025 I ran the 3rd and 8th fastest times of the year in NA at the 100K and 100-mile distances, respectively, for the 60-69 age group. I'm still testing my limits to see what a 60+ year-old, post-knee surgery runner can accomplish. |
