My blogs
| Introduction | Hej! I am an American journalist and producer and the 2011 recipient of the Swedish-American Exchange Fund, a grant awarded by the Swedish Institute. Currently, I am in Stockholm to report on the country's education system, which allows parents and students to choose any school – public or private – through a government-funded voucher program. The idea was that increased competition between schools for students (and therefore money) would lead to higher education standards and more cost efficiency. But has it worked? And could the model be adopted in the U.S.? I will publish the results of my investigation in American media outlets. In the meantime, I am writing this blog to document the time in-between interviews with school CEOs, politicians, economists, and parents, to reveal the other aspects of Swedish life that I observe along the way. The names of the Swedish family members with whom I'm staying: Åsa (the mother), Jerker (the father), and Borris (the son) are reoccurring characters. |
