| Introduction | I've been casting random thoughts into cyberspace for years, which I liken to putting messages in a bottle and tossing them into the sea. Occasionally a reply would wash ashore that was worth reading and let me know that I was not as alone as I thought. To some degree we are all alone in the sense that we are each unique. Consequently, there are always going to be some barriers of separation between us and others. However, we are not completely unique, and therefore never totally alone. Shared commonalities can bring us together and bridge differences that separate us all from each other. Language can help reveal facets of our being that others can relate to. This is not meant to limit language to such a simple function. It is also true that language can conceal and divide. Language is an extremely versatile tool, which is what makes it so valuable. I revel in it. However, as valuable as it is, it is only the outer garment of mind, without which it is only sound or scratchings devoid of meaning. |
