About me

Location Canberra, ACT(AUS), Australia
Introduction I am a consultant in the IT industry and have lived in Canberra since 2000. I have an adult son with Asperger Syndrome, who came to live in Canberra in 2003. We both started attending Asperger Syndrome support meetings at that time. I enjoy the social interaction that Autism Asperger ACT makes possible, and the opportunity to get to know other families and individuals who face the challenge of Aspergers. It has been very helpful to me to be able to observe and learn more about the wide range of Aspergers behaviours and the problems that Aspergers people have in trying to fit into "normal" society. Over and over I have seen distressed parents come to support meetings and be able to finally feel like there is someone they can talk with who understands what they are going through. My son was only diagnosed with Aspergers when he was 23 years old. Before that I was very confused about what "the problem" was - or what I could do to help him. Our interactions through the support group have helped both of us learn to understand and cope much more effectively with this disability. Our lives are better and we are happier.
