Introduction Jeff Lovitt is the founding Chair of New Diplomacy. From 2005-2015, he was Executive Director of PASOS, a network of independent think-tanks in Europe and Central Asia. He has conceived and managed projects in the Middle East, the Caucasus and Central Asia, and is author and editor of Democracy's New Champions. European Democracy Assistance after EU Enlargement (2008), The Right Approach to Europe. An Advocacy Handbook for Civil Society: Understanding and Influencing EU Policymaking (2012), and the European Integration Index 2014 for Eastern Partnership Countries. In 2012 and in 2014, he served as co-Chair of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum. From January-June 2015, he was a member of the Advisory Group on Media Freedom in the Eastern Partnership countries, chaired by the Latvian Presidency of the EU Council. From 2000-2005, he was Director of Communications at the international secretariat of Transparency International. From 1995-1998, he was Central Europe correspondent for The European. From 1987-1995, he was an editor and journalist in London for The European, the Sunday Times, New Statesman, and Tribune. He was an op-ed writer for the International Herald Tribune.
