| Introduction | I was born in Philadelphia and now live in a small town just outside the city. I had no thoughts about becoming an artist until my late 20's, when I quit my job and enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. I have been painting ever since. Most of my work has consisted of landscape and still life done from memory and imagination. I am interested in what gets lost and what is retained by working this way. The results are recognizable but not realistic, and I expect I will continue to explore this idea. Recently, I have been working more from direct observation – with allowance for some heightening / distortion of appearances. As one of our drawing teachers once said to my wife, "Sometimes you have to make it wrong to make it right". |
