IntroductionBorn and raised in a small farming community I attended my local university and it turned out that I had an aptitude for chemistry. I was drawn into the chemistry degree from biochemistry. The original plan was BSc. then BEd and teaching high school. The third most important decision of my life happened when it was my time to graduate with an Honours BSc. I decided that I would never forgive myself if I did not see how far I could go. So I went to graduate school. Cycloadditions, 1,3-dipoles, heterocycles, radicals, photochemical isomerisations and semi empirical calculations defined the next four years of my life punctuated by the appearance of a beautiful blue gas resulting in a PhD. Fellowships and contractual positions eventually gave way to a sequence of faculty positions. I then had an opportunity to be at the very beginning of something so I walked away from everything that I had done to start again, here, at a small liberal arts and science university, trying to get it right the first time.

When your science teacher smashed a frozen rose with a hammer, did you warm the petals to bring them back to life?

The romantic notion that the petals can be brought back to life is exactly what we are trying to avoid in these classes. Entropy rules!
