| Introduction | On January 1, 2009, we packed four suitcases and moved to Germany with our 10-month-old daughter. It was my first time out of North America and I hadn't taken a single German course yet. Although I had a lot to fear, my scariest moment so far was simply waiting for boarding in the San Francisco International Terminal that New Year's Day, feeling painfully self-conscious and un-European. Since then, we've plunged ourselves into life here in a way that will make it way too hard to leave next summer. I'm so thankful for technology and for you readers who are keeping us in your lives, even though we're 5,000 miles away. |
