| Introduction | I am a Master's level Occupational Therapist and mother to three brilliant boys! Together with my husband Sean, we set out to redefine the reality that was thrust upon us the day Lucas was born with T21 (why T21 and not "Down Syndrome?" see my first blog). Lowered expectations, poor health, memory and learning problems, on and on. What resulted was a three year reeducation in intervention. How things like teaching your baby to read, good nutrition including natural supplements, positioning changes in infancy, and therapeutic play, among other things have the ability to intervene in everything from learning to formation of bone structure and gross motor abilities. What resulted is a 3 year old boy who can read, taught himself the map of the United States, and doesn't qualify for special education (another term I despise) service as he enters preschool. I am in the process of finishing a book "Redefining the Reality of Down Syndrome; Baby's First Year" but quite frankly couldn't wait to start giving new parents the tools to shape the future for their child and their family. |
