| Introduction | Born and raised on Long Island, NY, I began my musical journey at the early age of 7 when my parents enrolled me in percussion (drum set, mallets, tympani) and piano lessons. My interest in South Indian music burgeoned during my first year (1999) as an undergraduate at Wesleyan University, where I enrolled in Sangeetam classes. In order to better understand the cultural context in which Carnatic music developed, I traveled to Madurai, India on a one year study abroad program in 2001. While there, I continued my mrdangam lessons and eventually took up Tamil folk drumming (urumi, parai, tavil) as well as silambam. Since 2001 I have lived in Tamil Nadu for almost 4 years during which I had the opportunity to study Tamil language and literature on two American Institute of Indians Studies fellowships. Currently I live in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia where I am conducting research for my dissertation on Tamil hip hop. |
