IntroductionI was born and raised in rural Montana, but didn't have my pro-animal sensibilities aroused in an intellectual way until an Ethics course at UC, Irvine in graduate school. After earning a B.A. at the University of Montana and the Ph.D. in Philosophy at UC, Irvine, I spent a year at Stanford University as an Ethics in Society Fellow. Then I got my current job teaching Philosophy at the University of Redlands, a small liberal arts University in southern California, where I've stayed for eighteen years. I have been with the Human-Animal Studies Executive Committee (sponsored by the Animals and Society Institute) for three years, and have written a proposal for a Human-Animal Studies minor that I expect to pass through committee at Redlands this fall. The course of which I'm most proud is my Community Service Learning course "Taking Animals Seriously," an introduction to Human-Animal Ethics combined with a four-week internship in animal care at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab Utah; I teach this course each May Term. I live in Beaumont, California with five cats and three dogs.
InterestsHuman-animal Ethics, Environmental Ethics, Moral Psychology, Animal Rescue and Care; also (for fun) natural history and history in general.
