IntroductionCarol Law Conklin graduated from Massachusetts College of Art, in Boston and went on to study printmaking at the Museum School of Fine Art also in Boston as well as studying in Rome, Italy for a summer. It was later in the Berkshire hills that she fell in love with the batik process and also her husband, Richard. Richard wisked her away after his cows broke in with her horses. They searched together for a farm and settled on one in Washington County, New York, Amity Farm, where they had a jersey cow dairy. Many beautiful images accumulated over those years where the cows were rotationally grazed for 6 months of the year at the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. Batik is a flowing sensous and soothing medium that is an ancient method of painting on fabric with wax and dyes. A batik may have up to a dozen or more wax and dyebaths before the wax is removed. The results are always magic! Much of her work relates to fantasy, mythology, and primordial themes. The farm has given inspiration to portray horses, cows, sheep, barns, fields and mountain views (farmscapes).
InterestsI enjoy practicing Tai Chi and have for over 11 years. In the warm fair weather, I love to practice outside at The top of the hill behind my house. Mark Tolstrup has been my valued instructor. I love animals. My husband and I had a jersey cow dairy farm for 28 years and still have a backyard cow, Steppin Up. I help feed calves on the Hoyt farm nearby who custom raise about 350+ calves each year and also help feed and milk the sheep and lambs at Dancing Ewe Farm several days a week.
