About me

Introduction I was born in Greece, educated in Greece and in the United States, and have lived in both countries. Growing up in Greece I knew no Jews, save one or two classmates at school. I met more Jews, both American as well as from other countries, in the States and concluded, like any sane person, that in addition to not having horns or any other external signs indicating that they are the devil's spawn, Jewish people have the same hopes and aspirations, strengths and weaknesses, good and bad hair days, like the rest of the people I have known. In the process, I have come to realize (and be bothered by this - a lot) that a great many Greeks harbor sentiments of blatant and vocal Antisemitism (so far, thankfully, non-violent), often in connection with real or, frequently, perceived injustices towards Greece by individuals and countries. This is particularly puzzling given that Greek Jews, never numerous nor particularly prosperous, were almost completely annihilated by the Germans, yet most of the survivors chose to remain in the country they clearly love and for which their parents and grandparents fought in numbers disproportionate to their percentage of the population.
