| Introduction | Dai Moong Yang was born 18 October 1916 in Tampin, Malaya, but grew up in Sitiawan and Temerloh. Her father, Dai Chui Lian, a court interpreter, was frequently transferred, so she was sent to a boarding school to complete her secondary education. Her mother, Siew Sum Chee, wanted her to become a music teacher but died when Moong Yang was only 16. At the age of 18 Moong Yang married Lee Kong Beng, also a court interpreter, and they spent many years moving around Pahang - Temerloh, Kuala Lipis, Bentong and Raub - before he was assigned in 1949 to the Supreme Court in Kuala Lumpur. Moong Yang joined the Confucian Private Secondary School as senior teacher and supervisor of the English Department. She also served in various committees of the Methodist Church. In 1956 Moong Yang was chosen to represent Southeast Asian women at several Methodist World Conferences in the U.S. Following her retirement after 30 years of service to the Confucian Private Secondary School, she devoted her time to learning the new Beijing form of Mandarin and serving the community through her involvement with the Wesley Senior Fellowship. She also began to record in story form her varied experiences in life. |
