IntroductionName: Dr. Penny Sutcliffe; Occupation: Medical Officer of Health/Chief Executive Officer (public health physician); Favourite food: Fresh foods and produce – large salads!; Guiltiest food pleasure: Cookies; Family size: four (two children 10 and under); Estimate of how much you and your family spend on food per week: Approximately $250 to $300 per week; Why you are participating in this project: I am participating because I think that it sends a strong message about the importance of the issue. I also believe that the experience will deepen my own understanding of the challenges of living on social assistance/low wage, which will improve my professional decision making. Why is this issue is important to you: People need to be able to afford to follow the advice we give them. Eating healthy is critical to physical and mental health. However, the best advice, based on the best research, means nothing if people can’t afford to take action. Of course the issue is broader and the ability to eat healthy foods is just one of the many cornerstones of a healthy life that may be out of reach for people living on social assistance/low income.
