Introduction	We are two women, Vivian and Jane, who have been friends for 28 years. Vivian has 5 children aged between 9 and 24. Jane has one daughter aged 10. Our friendship began in the 1980s and through the years we have shared confidences about boyfriends, pop music (1980s), clothes, marriage, children, education, teeenage years and higher education. The common thread of our conversations is the notion of ambition. We have gradually realised that ambition pervades almost every aspect of our mothering in the sense of wanting the best for them and finding ways of providing them with this.
