| Introduction | I guess I kind of like trees. Got sucked in when I bought my first tree i.d. book during my last semester at the University of Iowa in 1994. Started with casual botanizing on walks and hikes, and soon could not think or talk about much else (not entirely true). In the autumn of 1997, after 3 years of independent study like this in Iowa, NYC and SF, I decided it was time to do "the real work." I blame the writers Thoreau, Muir, Gary Snyder, Wendell Berry, Edward Abbey and a couple of uncles: Timothy Hayes of Brattleboro, VT and Yan Capretz of Great Barrington, MA. I looked in the Yellow Pages under the word "tree" and when I saw over 20 companies listed, I knew at least one of them would hire me to drag brush and stuff the chipper. Thank you Davey Tree Expert Company! I continue to receive unfaltering support from my wife Sarah Stangle, my family, and the friends and colleagues I am meeting along the way. I continue to be drawn to the educational side of things within our "green industry" and supporting the Britton Fund is my way of giving back. |
