About me

Occupation Author
Location Sonoma County, CA, United States
Introduction I'm the author of seven books of fiction and nonfiction, including the 2007 novel from HarperCollins, VIVALDI'S VIRGINS, which has been translated into 14 languages. My first novel, NORTHERN EDGE, won the Discover Prize. A GOLDEN WEB, my first YA novel, was published in April 2010 by HarperTeen. My treatment for a film adaptation of the novel was shortlisted for the Sundance/Sloan Commissioning Grant. My newest novel, near completion, is called "Saving Puccini."
Interests All kinds of dance (from ballet to Brazilian), learning other languages and studying other times and cultures, doing whatever I can to make the world a better place.
Favorite Movies The Labyrinth, The Lives of Others, After the Wedding, The Best of Youth
Favorite Music I'm a huge fan of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra (where my husband, Wayne Roden, plays in the viola section). I'm also a friend of the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, which had me write the liner notes for their fabulous "Four Seasons" CD and often asks me to give the pre-concert lecture (and a book-signing afterwards) when Vivaldi is on the program. I love Italian opera and, of course, have a special weakness for Puccini.
Favorite Books There are so many! Shirley Hazzard's THE GREAT FIRE. Norman Rush: MATING. Anthony Trollope's LADY ANNA. Rose Tremain: MUSIC AND SILENCE. Sandor Maracs's masterpiece, EMBERS. (I could go on and on...)
