| Introduction | Pat Zimmerman retired after a 26-year career in communications industry. She held management positions for Illinois Bell Telephone Company and AT&T. She helped create the new AT&T during divesture when the government broke up of the Bell System. She accepted an early retirement in 1989, sold her home in New Jersey, moved to Reno, Nevada. The next years of her life were spent in volunteer work teaching adults to read, write, and speak the English language. She is a certified Supervisory Trainer for ProLiteracy America and conducts workshops teaching other volunteers to train and tutor adults. She has been Elizabeth’s mentor since early 1992. Pat is currently president of Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Nevada, Reno. The American Institute has recognized her for her accomplishments for Public Service with the Jefferson Award and the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Award. Other awards include: Outstanding Trainers Award presented by the Nevada Literacy Coalition, “An Angel in the Flesh” award for community service by the Unity Church of Reno, and the President’s Volunteer Service Award from the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. |
