| Introduction | I am a juvenile defender. I have never met a client I thought couldn’t be saved. The Juvenile Court is closed to the public, which theoretically serves to shield juveniles from the stigma which accompanies a criminal record. Realistically, however, this shroud of confidentiality has developed quite a few rips and tears with the advent things such as specialty courts and registration laws. This often results in a stigmatized juvenile being subjected to the overwhelming power of the state without the check on state power that public scrutiny normally provides. It’s my job to zealously defend these kids, and to demand observance of their constitutional rights. For reasons too numerous to mention here, often times at the end of the day I am left frustrated and jaded, feeling not like a warrior for the protection of the rights of children, but feeling like nothing more than a Kangaroo Court Jester. |
