Introduction I was born a poor black child in the rural South -- no wait -- that was Steve Martin. I was born a blue-collar kid in Detroit. We neighborhood kids helped turn the west side of Detroit into what it is today. (Visible shudder) I was a terrible student in high school but somehow managed to earn a four-year scholarship to art school. I left art school early to take a job in advertising. It was the lure of money. When you don’t have much, more sounds better. I started out as an art director in Detroit, worked in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. All during that time I painted at night. My final job in advertising was as Executive Vice President, Creative Director of Chiat Day’s San Francisco office, and I was still painting at night. I left advertising to paint, sculpt and write full time.
Favorite Movies I have a collection of fourteen hundred movies, so it would be impossible to pick a favorite. I generally favor comedies, though.
Favorite Music Classical. Almost all.
Favorite Books Favorite book: Merry England, etc. by Ronald Searle. It’s my favorite partly because I designed an advertising campaign using his drawing style. He did the finished art for me, enjoyed my sketches and invited me to a cocktail party he had in New York. We sat in a corner for a couple of hours talking about art. Second favorite book: Napalm and Silly Putty, by George Carlin. Never met him, wish I had.

Favorite restaurant: The Artichoke, in Albuquerque.
