| Introduction | A professional meteorologist for over 46 years, Jim Gandy retired as chief meteorologist at WLTX-TV (CBS affiliate) in Columbia, SC on June 1, 2019. Jim is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist and has a number of awards and honors for his work over the years. Winner of 4 regional Emmys, an Emma, and the Masters Award by the SCBA in 2004. He is best known for his forecast of Hurricane Hugo in 1989, his work during the tornado outbreak in South Carolina in 1994 and the SC Flood of 2015. In Science Jim received The Award for Excellence in Science Reporting by a Broadcast Meteorologist from the American Meteorological Society in 2013, He was elected Fellow of the AMS in 2018. Jim was given the Order of the Palmetto upon retiring for his service over the years in South Carolina. It is the highest civilian honor awarded by the Governor of South Carolina. |
