| Introduction | My love of travel was instilled early, by my parents. They immigrated to the U.S. from China via Taiwan, so we often went back to Asia during my childhood. As a professor, my father took every chance to travel and he often took us with him. I spent a couple of summers in Switzerland, and lived for awhile in Taiwan, Australia, Holland and Germany, all before high school. During college, I spent a summer in China and then traveled around the world post-graduation with my boyfriend, Neil (now husband!). We backpacked for 8 months, violin and many books in tow. I always thought we would live abroad once we had kids. For some reason, that idea has morphed into a plan to backpack for 8 months through South America and Asia. Either we're not that original, or we simply know how to hold onto a good idea. Again, we'll have a violin in tow (that Ruby and I will share). But we'll have fewer books this time thanks to e-readers! And we plan to travel more slowly, do some intense language study, volunteer, and stay in nicer places. I really don't know how it will work out. I'm equal parts excited and apprehensive. Stay tuned! |
