Introduction | Jon Day’s fascination with insects of all sorts started as youngster in Boston, MA. “My mother was often horrified by what I’d bring into the house,” he says. He earned a B.S. in Environmental Science at Lyndon State College, a Masters degree in Ecology at The State University of New York at Fredonia; and a Ph.D. in Medical Entomology at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. He has been a professor of medical entomology at the University of Florida since 1998. He is one of the nation’s leading experts on the natural history, epidemiology, and ecology of mosquito-borne viruses found in North America. These include St. Louis encephalitis, eastern equine encephalitis, and West Nile viruses. Dr. Day and his colleagues have created “risk maps” to track mosquito-borne virus transmission in Florida. These risk maps are updated as the mosquito-borne virus situation in Florida changes and the maps can be viewed at http://eis.ifas.ufl.edu. These maps are used extensively by public health and other officials as they deal with vector-borne disease transmission in Florida. |
