Introduction	Growing up in the wilds of Cape York Peninsula gave me a passion for studying natural history, bird and animal watching. With a Mum who is a keen gardener and a father with a scientific bent, my interests were stimulated early and often. The Aboriginal mentors of my youth had an influence as well. As a young teacher, 'bird watching' was the way I legitimised my antisocial behaviour after a hard day at school. I have been very fortunate in the friends I have made who have helped me on this journey of discovery.
