| Introduction | Differences in listener, speaker and context can create confusing situations. Yesterday, on my iPod I listened to Hilary Duff(don’t ask!). Brandi Worley, approached me and asked, “Who do you have in there?” Caught off guard, I scrolled through my play list for something less embarrassing. Kelly Clarkston, no. Mobb Deep, Bingo! “Who’s Mobb Deep? Never heard of them,” Brandi said. “What else do you listen to?” I scrolled to the top and started reading the list, 50 Cent… “Who’s 50 Cent?” she asked. “You don’t know who he is? He’s a rapper?” “What, because I’m black I only listen to rap music?” she said. I immediately went on the defensive and started saying 50 Cent is well known. “You must know him; Eminem’s protégé.” She keeps responding to my every answer, saying I assumed she listens to rap because she’s Black. Just as I’m about to give up and go along with what she says, she ends the joke and says she was “messing with me.” I keep thinking about it, I did make that assumption. Race, gender and ethnicity play important parts in how we treat each other, no matter how much we may wish otherwise.
