Introduction My hybrid wine epiphany happened in late summer, 1998, when I tried a 1997 Inniskillin Marechal Foch (Ontario VQA) from the Niagara Peninsula. At that time, I was into wine appreciation for less than a year and was not yet aware that some grapes were hybrids, others vinifera, etc. The inky-purple colour of the Inniskillin Foch was more beautiful than anything I had tried up to then, and I was unspeakably impressed that a wine with such depth of colour and such a pure nose of rustic blackcurrant could come from Ontario. I started learning more about Marechal Foch and other hybrids quickly after that. Seeing what quality could result from proper viticulture and winemaking, I became a thorough supporter of grapes that can thrive in our challenging climate and still produce wines like that one. The rest was history.
