Introduction Heather is a chemist, former classroom teacher, science writer, and founder of the Broley Homestead. The Broley Homestead is a small iris farm and plant nursery located in the central piedmont region of North Carolina. Heather currently serves as the Vice President of the Eastern North Carolina Iris Society (an AIS affiliate in Region 4). She spent her formative years in California where she learned about growing iris from her mother, Alleah. Alleah is a plant pathologist, former Judges Training Chair for AIS Region 14, past editor of the Santa Rosa Iris Society and Region 14 newsletter, and volunteer at the Broley Homestead. She recently relocated from California to live closer to Heather. Alleah spent her formative years in New Mexico where she learned about growing iris from her mother, Gertie May Barnes. Gertie was an AIS judge and former Regional Vice President for AIS Region 23.
