| Introduction | Nicole Petrescu studied painting and visual arts at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, graduating in 2011 from the MFA program. She had the opportunity to assist internationally renowned artists such as Ann Hamilton, Mel Chin, Jill Downen, Takashi Horisaki, and Patrick Daugherty with permanent or temporary installations. Nicole Petrescu was born in Bucharest, Romania and lived half of her life trying to escape - physically and psychologically - the influence of the oppressive communist regime. Her early social experiences established the bedrock of her complex sensibility and developed her dissenter personality. A diligent observer of the socio-political milieu, Nicole developed an instrumentalist approach to art making, focusing mainly on inhabitable physical and cultural spaces through the lens of relational holism and environmental justice. She often seeks refuge from aspects of social malevolence in the solace of natural elements and their primal magnificence. Her affinity for natural processes and eastern philosophy leads her desire in establishing meaningful artistic goals that focus on the natural environment as a place for sharing. |
