| Introduction | Who am I? I was born in Saudi Arabia over half a century ago to parents from Calicut. My home town Calicut lies between the mountainous Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea on the South Western tip of the Indian peninsula - the beautiful Malabar plain. It is widely believed that Arab traders came to the Malabar ports as early as the 4th century. They came for precious spices - pepper, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon - that are abundant in Kerala. With the advent of Islam, these seafarers brought their faith with their trade. The Muslims of the Malabar region are known as Mappilas. The cuisine is heavily influenced by the early Arab traders, the European traders who came later, and the freely available fresh local ingredients. The food is to die for and this is my culinary heritage. |
