Introduction Sharon Wagoner's work frequently appears in Jane Austen Magazine and on Georgian Index. She has always been fascinated by the origins of the words and objects in our lives. They are like artifacts found in an archaeological dig. For example: the word husband entered English from Old Norse when Norsemen married Saxon girls, after King Alfred stopped further intrusions by the Norse and made a treaty with them. One day a young Norseman walked to the Saxon farm just across the treaty boundary and began to court the girl from the next farm. He soon asked her if she would take him to husband and the word entered English.
