| Introduction | I was born in the year the Lord of the Rings was first published. It would be several weeks before I read it. As a young child I had many hobbies, my favourite being burying animals (usually dead, although that tortoise was doubtful) then digging them up a year or so later (almost certainly dead) then trying to put them back together again. I later learned that this behaviour is common amongst those who grow up to become serial-killers or deities (apparently there is a difference). You will be relieved to hear that I moved on from those strange habits to become qualified in shoving my arm up cow’s bottoms. I achieved greatness in attempting to do this on an American Buffalo, resulting in a short but spectacular flight. Two wives and four children later (the buffalo was not involved) I have retired from arm wrestling and managed to leave the UK for Europe in the direction of France, just in time for the UK to leave Europe in the direction of America. Continental drift is proving to be rather too slow. Annick and I now live happily far from the madding crowd, deep in the depths of the bottom end of France, although the local cattle still give me a slight nervous twitch. |
