| Introduction | Big Island Artist Jane Word Taylor has called Waimea home since 1954 when her parents brought their four year-old daughter from Connecticut to the tiny ranch town nestled at the base of the Kohala Mountains. Jim and Lynn Taylor devoted their lives to building the twenty-one student Hawaii Episcopal Academy into the top college preparatory school that is now Hawaii Preparatory Academy. With busy parents and finding herself in an unfamiliar environment, Taylor spent much time drawing and exploring. The land itself, with its hills, earth, sweet air, plants, and creatures became her closest companion and this deep connection still informs the sense of place in her artwork. Taylor celebrates the interconnectedness of all things in her paintings. As well as painting, Taylor taught art, first at Island School on Kaua’i, and then for 30 years at her alma mater, Hawaii Preparatory Academy. Retiring in June of 2020, Taylor took some time to care for her mother. Lynn Taylor, an artist herself as well as the founder of the Hawaii Preparatory Academy Elementary School, passed away in January of 2021. After a period of recovery, Taylor has recently begun to paint again. |
