| Introduction | I’m piloting a Wasatch Wilderness Rites of Passage Program at East High with 11 students from 7 nationalities. I work in partnership with the Science Dept. Chair and the English Language Learning Dept. Chair. We are a leadership cohort showing that diversity equals health: in our environment and in our human communities. Diversity is the innate architecture of being. Programmed into every living cell and visible in all environments is diversity. We model ways to improve the health of our human communities. I discovered my vision to combine education reform and ecological literacy as a wilderness therapy instructor for adjudicated youth in Montana. In the privacy of the wilderness, teenagers whispered stories about inequities and discrimination in the education system. I spent my own youth at a high school with over 70 % students of color, but in my classes on the accelerated track there were less than 5% racial minorities. During the last 17 yrs. as an educator I’ve used the wilderness as a landscape for transformative learning. My definition of ecological literacy emphasizes the external and internal development with people as they learn to “read” the natural world. |
