| Introduction | The Voice of Plantation People Organization (VOPP) is a non-governmental organization dedicated to empowering the marginalized Malayaga community in Sri Lanka. Originating from the challenges faced by the community in the southern provinces, VOPP aims to safeguard the land and housing rights of the plantation people who have long endured socio-economic and political difficulties, often akin to modernized slavery. VOPP has undertaken various initiatives, including setting up a library in Diyadawa and conducting capacity-building workshops. Through extensive advocacy efforts and training sessions on human and fundamental rights, VOPP continues to amplify the voices of the community, garnering attention from the state media and government officials. Recognized under the Company Act No 7 of 2007 in 2023, the organization has persistently advocated for the rights of the Malayaga people, notably participating in significant walks and events commemorating their heritage and rights. |
