Introduction Robert Sward has taught at Cornell University, the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, and UC Santa Cruz. A Fulbright scholar and Guggenheim Fellow, he was chosen by Lucille Clifton to receive a Villa Montalvo Literary Arts Award. His 30 books include Four Incarnations (Coffee House Press) and Heavenly Sex. His most recent books, The Collected Poems and God is in the Cracks (Black Moss Press) are now in their second printing. He is also the author of Heavenly Sex and The Toronto Islands, a best-selling illustrated history of a close-knit community and important historic area in the heart of Toronto. Born and raised in Chicago, Sward served in the U.S. Navy in the combat zone during the Korean War and later worked for CBC Radio and as book reviewer and feature writer for The Toronto Star and The Globe and Mail. “In truth,” writes Jack Foley, “Sward is a citizen, at heart, of both countries. At once a Canadian and American poet, one with a foot in both worlds, he also inhabits an enormous in-between.” After 14 years in Canada, Sward returned to the U.S. in 1985. He lives in Santa Cruz, CA with his long-time partner, visual artist Gloria Alford.
