| Introduction | Welcome to the world of the English teacher in France. I've been here a while and have been doing the job for a couple of decades. Over this time I have collected many examples of what I call "abuse of the dictionary": howlers I have found in pupils' homework which are generally due to the misuse of that useful tool - the English-French dictionary, compounded in certain cases by the woeful inability of the French youngsters concerned to use their own language correctly. The development of on-line translation sites has provided further scope for ghastly mistranslation as it is clear that "garbage in" produces "garbage out". The aim of this modest blog is to share with you the choicest examples of how not to translate - in general if I didn't laugh I'd cry - and if you too have encountered this phenomenon feel free to post your examples. |
