| Introduction | At 80, the road ahead might be shorter, but it’s a road where challenges and serendipity still reign. I believe good journalism is vital, am mildly proficient in Swahili, love baseball, golf, old movies, books and music (from old rock ‘n’ roll to opera), relish Ethiopian food, gravitate to good beer (and shared a few Castles in a Johannesburg backyard with Nelson Mandela), have jumped out of perfectly good airplanes (as part of my job in the U.S. Army covering skydiving for the post newspaper), have officiated a score of weddings, have two terrific grown-up children and four wonderful grandchildren, have been married to the same woman for more than five decades, have visited all 50 states, and have seen a lot of nooks and crannies in the world and plan to see more. And in 2014-15, I was living my dream -- in Kampala, Uganda, as executive editor of its largest independent national newspaper and two radio stations. Finally retired, Joyce and I are in Clovis, California. So, life is good in great part because we’ve worked to make it that way and because of the people in our lives. |
