| Introduction | Mother of four children ages 18, 16, 14, and 12. Home full-time since first child was born. Brief freelance work as a writer and editor. Currently in a graduate program in Mental Health Counseling. I'm looking down the road to what undoubtedly is the very near future when my children will be out of the house. I'm alternately terrified by this and excited at the prospect of a more independent life. My future work as a counselor should fulfill my maternal need to nuture. I feel that I'm "on the cusp of change" as the blog title suggests, meaning that I need to shift my identity from that of mother/wife/homemaker to something else--but what? A new career will certainly help, but will that be enough? Do those close ties with children grow more distant as they get older and independent? I'd love to hear what others think about this--moms, dads, anyone with an interest. |
