Introduction Economic socialist. Civil libertarian. Social conservative. Yes, they mix. My brand of socialism is bottom-up, based upon an association of worker owned and run cooperatives, which may interact in a market. I think the Bill of Rights is a template for all civilized societies. And I think there is an important difference between political freedom and unrestricted "individual liberty", which under the guise of "social progressivism" is really just indignant selfishness and hedonism. I may not advocate a return to the "blue laws", but I'm not going to hail as progressive that which I instinctively view as degenerative. I believe in God and in the existence of a soul, and in spite of my periodic bouts of misanthropic despair, I continue to harbor faith in human reason, in the possibility that two minds can meet and enrich one another, above and beyond the obscene cackling of the mob, the impudent blathering of the "talking heads" in the newspaper columns and television news shows, and the other forces arrayed against rational thought, whether they shade themselves with religious or atheistic/scientistic overtones.
