IntroductionI work for Microsoft and lead on our engagement with the Building Schools for the Future programme. I am involved on a daily basis in discussions about education transformation with school leaders, local authorities, Government agencies as well as the ICT players and construction companies on the supply side of the equation. I also get the opportunity to support my colleagues in the same conversations in other countries. Wherever I go and at whatever level I have these discussions the same questions get asked: why change? why not improve what we have? what could transformed learning look like? How do I move from where I am to another place? where are the exemplars? This blog will share some of my experiences to try and help people find their own answers to these very important questions. I think you will see I work from the view there has to be a step change in education systems and an experience for young people that is more in line with how they want to learn.
InterestsI first became involved with Microsoft in 1994 as the driving force behind the groundbreaking Highdown Information Hub superhighways trial. The trial set out to make the vision of a Connected Learning Community a reality and became the subject of great interest not only in the UK but across the world. Highdown became Microsoft’s “school of the 21st Century” and at the time was referenced around the world by Bill Gates as an illustration of how ICT was set to make a huge impact on education and included in his book “Business @ the speed of thought”. Over the last 4 years as part of my BSF role I have spent time developing strategic relationships with a number of local authroities who want to create a step change and rethink the organisation and delivery of education and learning. work looks beyond education to the wider context of local authority modernisation programmes including eGovernment and economic development.
